The Three Levels

One idea keeps its shape at three depths — the chapter argues it whole, the module turns it, the dive exhausts one move of it. Deeper is sharper, never different.

Vision · real substrate

echd speaks in the present tense over a build ladder. Every module, verb, key, and port named on this page is real; the composition into one standing platform is the vision the ladder builds.

§1

The dive

echd.toc.md · echd.design.md §4

The map has exactly three levels, and they are not a table of contents — they are one idea rendered at three resolutions. A chapter is a landing: it argues the whole idea in one sitting, coarse but complete. A module is a hub: it takes one piece of that argument and turns it around, the idea held and then applied. A dive is a page: it commits to a single move of the module's idea and follows it all the way down — the exact clause, the worked detail, the boundary case. Eight chapters, thirty-two modules, ninety-six dives.

The relationship between the levels is the load-bearing part. Each deeper level is a strict refinement of the one above it, never a different claim. A reader who stops at the chapter leaves with a true picture, only coarser; the module sharpens it, the dive sharpens it again — and at no point does the fine print contradict the headline. This is the promise the structure makes: you may descend as far as the question needs and no further, and the level you stop at will not have lied to you.

One idea, three depths

chapter the landing the argument, whole E0 · the platform → module the hub one idea, turned E0.1 · how to read → dive the page one move, exhausted this page same idea · three depths · deeper is sharper, never different
The chapter — the argument, whole. A landing makes the case in one sitting: the theorem, the trade, the master frame. You leave with the shape of the whole and nowhere it misleads you — only places it has not zoomed in.
The module — one idea, turned. A hub takes a single piece of the chapter and turns it around: the idea held, then the idea applied. It is the chapter's claim, narrowed to one surface and examined from both sides.
The dive — one move, all the way down. A dive commits to a single move of the module's idea and exhausts it: the exact clause, the worked detail, the boundary case. It earns one sharpened rule and hands it to you.

Hover or focus a level to read it; click to pin. Without scripting, all three read in sequence.

§3

Deeper is sharper

the same idea, resolved

The discipline the three levels enforce is that depth adds resolution, not revision. Picture the opposite: a course where the chapter tells one story and the dive quietly tells another, the detail undercutting the headline. That structure punishes the reader for descending — the more you learn, the less you can trust what you already read. echd refuses it. A dive may surprise you with how far a move goes, but it never reverses the module, and the module never reverses the chapter.

That is why you can read this course at whatever depth your question has. Skim the eight chapter landings and you hold the platform's whole shape. Drop into a module when one surface matters. Take a dive when you need the exact clause to build against. Each stop is honest on its own terms; the thread that keeps them honest together is the one branded identity the whole course is organized around.

§4

The rule

one line to carry

The levels rule — deeper is sharper, never different. A chapter argues the idea, a module turns it, a dive exhausts one move of it, and no level contradicts the one above — it only resolves it. Read as far as the question needs; the level you stop at is true, if coarse, and the next level down only sharpens it.
