The Platform, Standing

A theorem opens the course, and the platform orders from it — every tier at a chosen point on the consistency/availability trade, one branded identity threading the whole.

Vision · real substrate

echd speaks in the present tense over a build ladder. Every module, verb, key, and port named on this page is real; the composition into one standing platform is the vision the ladder builds.

§1

The chapter

echd.course.md §2–§5

The whole platform in one sitting. A theorem opens the course: no unreliable distributed system holds both safety and liveness — consistency and availability — through a partition. The platform does not defeat the theorem; it orders from it. Every tier sits at a chosen point on the trade: the ledger blocks rather than diverges, the cache answers rather than waits, the dashboard stamps its staleness rather than hiding it. This chapter teaches the reading protocol (the vision plaque, three levels, the grounding map), then the theorem as an instrument — safety and liveness, the proof in two indistinguishable writes, the four coping strategies — and closes by walking the master frame end to end, placing every later chapter on it.

The foundation is the course's own manuscript, "Perspectives of Echd on the CAP Theorem" (docs/echdash/course/echd.course.md): consistency is a safety property — nothing bad ever happens; availability is a liveness property — eventually every request receives a response; and an unreliable network denies both at once. The four copings of its §4 are the platform's vocabulary, and the fifth move — segmenting along data, operation, function, user, and hierarchy — is the platform's shape. Two lineage pages carry the deeper CAP reading today: the impossibility and best-effort consistency.

consistency-first · safety availability-first · liveness segmenting — each tier its own trade along data · operation · function · user · hierarchy ledger · seam gates one transaction → E5 staleness bounds version<>value → E4 memory · bus · surface last-known + as_of → E4 E3 E6
Best-effort availability · consistency-first. Guarantee correctness regardless of the network and optimize responsiveness for the common case. On this platform the ledger and every branded gate take this stance: one transaction, row locks, exactly-once by index — correct always, fast when the network is kind. This is E5's register.
Best-effort consistency · availability-first. Guarantee a response always and let freshness be bounded rather than absolute. The memory answers from the nearest tier that can tell the truth, the bus retains and replays, the surface serves last-known and says so. This is the register of E3, E4, and E6.
Trading the trade · the dial. Set the tolerance explicitly — how stale may an answer be? The framed version<>value, newer-wins by mint order, and the as_of stamp make the bound visible instead of implicit. The dial lives wherever amber appears.
Segmenting · the platform's shape. Split the system into tiers, each with its own trade, along data, operation, function, user, and hierarchy — the whole guarantees neither property while every part guarantees exactly what it owes. The seam that keeps the segments one system is the branded id of E2.
